The communication job scene is changing in Wellington. After more than a year when the market was very tight, it has now picked up. There are more jobs coming vacant, and people are starting to move, with more contract and permanent opportunities available.
What are these opportunities? How have employers’ expectations changed? And what should we expect in salaries?
At this month’s Be Heard networking event, we will hear from one of our sponsors, PowerHouse People, about the new shape of recruitment in Wellington. Annabel McCallum and Dave Hollander are senior recruitment consultants who cover permanent and contract opportunities in the government and private sectors. They will offer some of the best advice you can get on where your next job might be, and how to get it – all free to IABC members.

Our June event was a very informative and stimulating presentation from Telecom's Head of Internal Communications, Megan Wiltshire, on communicating during the recent XT network outage. Megan was an engaging and candid presenter and we received some excellent feedback in our regular event evaluation survey.
Commenting on the event, attendee Iain MacLean said, "It was great to hear from someone who was an insider in a high profile event that was still fresh in our minds. Megan shared some of the key learnings she took from the crisis. These included:
Keep the messages simple, and have only one version of the truth for everyone inside and outside the organisation.
Have a plan, but don't spend too long planning — get on with the doing.
The realisation that there are 'moments' in a crisis when the communications have a greater impact than you were expecting, and make a real change to how people are feeling.
"Megan also demonstrated the power of video in a crisis situation. One of the videos produced was a sophisticated pseudo-documentary that showed staff dealing with the situation. But equally powerful was a brief, unscripted and frank video done by Telecom CEO, Paul Reynolds, early in the crisis, which made a real impact on staff across Telecom."
Electronic communication methods most used for employee communication
Email (83%) and intranet (75%) are reported as the most frequently used communication vehicles for engaging employees according to the 2010 IABC Research Foundation and Buck Consultants Employee Engagement survey. Social media tools have been gaining popularity with roughly 45 percent of respondents indicating that they currently communicate through Facebook, Twitter and instant messaging.
There were nearly 900 respondents to the Research Foundation/Buck Consultants’ second survey, with 71% of respondents at a director or manager level or above. Compared with last year’s results, a higher percentage of participants have established external and internal social media policies. The complete study is available by download to all IABC members at no charge from the Research Foundation website.
